Talisman of Tsunodaishi


Since Kyoto is an old town, a talisman also has a history.

Have you seen this talisman plastered on the entrance of a house?

It looks a little weirdness.

It is called “Jiedaishi Ryogen”, a Buddist priest of Tendai sect in the Heian period,He died on the first day of the year. It is also called “Gansandaishi,” and he invented an oracle.

When the epidemic went around at that time, he prayed for people’s recovery. He turned into devil, and in return the epidemic was disperesed.Since then it has come to call “Tsunodaishi.”

Nowadays it resides at the entrance of a house to guard people.
