The beginning of Gion Matsuri
The Gion Festival is a festival held every July in Kyoto at Gion Yasaka Shrine.
In the Heian period 869, when the epidemic broke out during the rainy season, we welcomed the gods of Gion such as Susano Wonomikoto, set up 66 halberds to calm the epidemic, and sent a portable shrine to pray for the epidemic to disappear. Is said to be the beginning.
Welcome God to the town
Gion matsuribayashi of conchikitin echoes, and it is a long festival that lasts for a month, such as welcoming, dedicating, praying, and celebrating God.
At Yasaka Shrine, "Susanoo-no-Mikoto," "Kusinadahime no Mikoto," and "Yahashira Mikogami" are enshrined.
The "Shinkosai" is held from around 16:00 on July 17th to welcome the spirits to the town, and three portable shrines are placed at the "Otabisho" in Shijo-Teramachi. Will be passed.
You will be able to return to Yasaka Shrine again at the Kankousai, which will be held from around 17:00 on July 24th.
It is said that if you visit the god who is staying at the Otabisho from the 17th to the 24th, your wish will come true. We also do a tour of Mr. Akiko, so why not try it in earnest!

Staff recommended How to enjoy the pre-festival
Find the May floats
Each halberd has a story, so try to find your favorite story. It is also recommended to take a look around the gorgeous halberds, arts and crafts with a long history. It's also exciting to look for the cool side of the musicians! ??
I want to avoid crowds
The aim is the 13th! Almost all floats have been built and there are still few onlookers, so it is recommended. There are some floats that do not have an event only on this day, so it is easy to get an explanation. Although it is crowded with people, there are night shops and it becomes a pedestrian paradise, so if you want to enjoy the atmosphere of the festival, it's the 15th and 16th.
Recommended Gion Festival goods!
Each halberd has a lot of elaborate tastes, so it's fun to look around the amulets and goods.
Ashikariyama is full of towels. Hakurakutenyama has a lot of reasonable goods.
Iwatoyama also sells edible rice dumplings. Gion Matsuri's rice dumplings are a ward off evil, so decorate the front door with items sold at Naginata-hoko!
In addition to the halberd, pay attention to the shops around it. On Shinmachi-dori, the Japanese general store "Kurochiku" is bargaining and you can buy Japanese accessories at a bargain. Enjoy the bargain at the kimono shop on Muromachi-dori you know.

How to enjoy the festival after the staff recommends
Gorgeous flower umbrella cruise
In 1966, the pre-festival and the post-festival were integrated due to the influence of traffic conditions, but the "flower umbrella cruise" has come to be carried out in the form of handing down the post-festival. In the Hanagasa procession, women who could not participate in the procession also participate, and there is a fun different from the power of the previous festival, such as a gorgeous procession wearing a children's portable shrine and a flower umbrella.
After-festival, revival for the first time in about 150 years
The post-festival is back in 2014. The procession of flower umbrellas has continued, and there are many things to see! The pre-festival is visited by about 200,000 people, but the post-festival is about 10,000 people. It's just getting started, so now may be your chance.
Gion Matsuri is crowded and tired ... Even those who have such experience can enjoy the atmosphere of Gion slowly at the post-festival.
